How a Magic Trick can
be Boring or Attractive?

During a magic show it is obvious that the public has to believe that something impossible is made possible by use of magic. The illusion has to convince the spectators that there is nothing fake about the performance. The show has to appear to be supernatural, otherwise there will be no interest. To amaze and entertain, isn't that the goal of each performance?

This leads us to wonder how a magic trick can be made more attractive. What can make the difference between two performers presenting the same trick? The art to create the element of surprise and to stay psychologically one step ahead of your audience is to simply tell a story with your performance.

The story can be used to misdirect your audience. As you are telling the story you can, for example, show an item to distract the audience's attention while you are performing a secret move. If your story is well narrated, it will make the audience imagine. When your audience is lost in their own thoughts, put there by you, they will tend to believe the story and therefore the illusion more than wonder how the trick is being performed. Your goal should be to engage your audience to such a degree that they forget about work, worries and life outside of your performance; much like when you go to the cinema and get lost in the movie you are watching.

The pattern of your stories must obey a few simple rules:

  • It is not just simply a comment, such as, "Here is a white ball, I place it in my hand"... It does not announce the outcome, "The ball will disappear".

  • It is not depreciative. You cannot say, "I am going to perform a small trick". Your audience expects you to perform a trick, they do not expect you to perform a small trick though. You must remove all negative chatter from your performance, change "No, I'm joking!" to "Yes, I am joking!"

  • You must be specific. Instead of saying, "Raise your hand". you should say, "Raise your right hand". Any inaccuracies create doubt.

  • Humor should be handled with caution, your sense of humor may not amuse your audience. It could be misunderstood or interpreted incorrectly.

  • Be careful with improvisation or indelicate puns. You should well plan your verbiage for your performance well in advance. It should be your script and you should not venture very far from it.

Always remember that laughter can be created without humor. The art of magician's is to create laughter through the element of surprise and amazement!
