The Chameleon Card

Effect:

The magician spreads the cards face up and asks a spectator to choose a card. The chosen card is placed face up on the table. The magician puts the card back into the deck. Then the chosen card appears to be the only card that has a different appearance on the back and is placed face up on the table a second time.

The magician explains this chosen card has the ability to transfer the appearance on it is back to another card in the deck.

To prove it the magician performs a shuffle and the spectator is asked to say “Stop” at any time. Once stopped, the magician stops shuffling and shows the card corresponding at the point he has stopped; this will be the second card chosen.

Once the magician has finished his shuffle he rubs the first chosen card on the deck and turns the card face down on the table. The appearance of its back has magically changed; the blue back card has been turned to a red back card.

The cards are spread face down and the card with the different back is replaced; this is the second card chosen.

Preparation:

Substitute one card of the 52 playing cards by a card of another deck of cards with a different back appearance. This particular card is placed at the bottom of the deck; we will call this card "special card". In our  case, let's take the Jack of Diamonds.

Performing:

1.    Spread the cards face up to the spectator and ask her to choose a card.

2.    If she chooses the 52nd card, “the special card”, there is very little probability that it happens, but in case it happens, do something else. For example shuffle the cards and say “It is strange, you have chosen the only card in the deck with a different back appearance”.

Normally, she will choose another card; as she takes one, take care to not show her the back of her card; ask her to place it face up on the table. Imagine she chooses “10 of Clubs” (Photo 3). Photo 3

3.    Cut the deck off, and place the chosen card beneath the bottom card of the deck, taking care not to show her the back of her card. By doing this, you have placed her chosen card beneath the special card. Then square the deck of cards. Photo 4

4.    Spread the cards face down on the table so that the spectator can see one card with a different back. Place apart on the table, all the cards above the special card and the other cards in your hand. Having the special card on top and her chosen card in second position. Photo 5

5.    Turn these cards face up so that their backs are not visible. Tell your spectator “It is strange because you have chosen the only card in the deck which has a different back”.

At this moment, perform the glide technique and instead of taking out the top card (The special card), take out the second card (see photo 6). Place her chosen card face up on the table. Of course contrarily to the photo, the glide isn't visible if you hold the cards face up.
She thinks her chosen card is also the special card.

6.   The special card of the deck is still on top because of the glide you have done.
Take the deck of cards you have previously placed apart with the special card still overtaking. It is important that the special card still overtakes, because the next step consists of cutting
the deck off at that point.

7.      As the special card is on top, it is easy for you to cut the deck off and bring the special card (Jack of Diamonds) to the bottom position. Photo 8

8.   Now, you are going to perform a real bluff. Force the bottom card to be chosen as a second card, you can use a Hindu shuffle for that or use a slip force. There are many techniques for that. To use the Hindu shuffle, perform like that:

You have previously told the spectator to say stop at any time. As you are passing some blocks of cards from your right hand to your left hand, at the moment the spectator says "STOP", show her directly the bottom card of the deck you are holding in your right hand. It gives the sensation to the spectator the card you are showing, has been chosen randomly. But in fact, it's the initial bottom card of the deck. It's a real bluff, I have tested it and it works very well. Photo 9

9.     Once the special card is forced, go on shuffling the cards. After that, explain the card she has chosen has the ability to transfer the appearance of it’s back to another card. To show it her, hold the card in your hand face up and rub it on the deck of cards, turn it face down.

For the spectator, the card's back has miraculously changed. Explain that in fact the card's back has been transferred to another card. As you tell this story, spread the cards face down on the table and return the special card, this is her second chosen card (Jack of Diamonds). Sleight of Hand
