Automatic Cards Trick:
49 Cards
Effect:
49
cards are
dealt face up in 7 columns containing 7 cards each. A spectator
thinks mentally about one of these cards and says in which column it
is. The magician gathers the card and deals again the 49 cards
in 7 columns, the spectator says again in which column the chosen
card is. After gathering the cards, the magician taps gently 3 series
of time on the deck. At the third time, the chosen card magically
rises from the deck
Equipment:
An
ordinary deck
of playing cards.
Performing:
This
magic trick
is automatic. Note that the magician can perform it without looking.
All the dealing can be done by the spectator. Later, I will show you
how you can perform it without looking.
| 1)
The spectator is asked to
remove randomly
3 cards
from the deck of 52 playing cards. |

2)
Take
the 49 cards left and deal 7 columns containing 7 cards in each.
To
illustrate, all the Spades from the Ace up to the Seven are placed in
the sixth column (Photo 2).

3) Ask the
spectator to think mentally about one card and to say you in which
column the chosen card is located. Once it is done, the
magician
gathers the cards face up in this order:
The cards of the first
column are placed on top the cards of the second column, then these
14 cards are placed on top of the third column, follow this pattern
until you have placed the first 6 columns on the seventh. By doing
this, you've placed the first column at the seventh position; the
second column at the sixth position, the third column at the fifth
position, the fourth stays at the fourth, the fifth is placed at the
third, the sixth at the second and the seventh at the first.
The
order of the columns is therefore reversed when you turn the deck of
cards faces down.
Imagine the chosen card is 2 of Spades.
|
4)
Deal the 49 cards just as you did before. The spectator tells you
again which column her card is located in.
You
can note, in this example that all the spades from the Ace up to the
Seven are on the second position of each column.

5) At this
moment, you know which her chosen card is. For example, if she tells
you her card is in the fifth column at the first dealing, and in the
third column at the second dealing. To locate her card, count 5 cards
upwards in the third column of the second dealing.
In
our case, the 2 of Spades is in the second column. Gather the 6 other
columns in two block of 21 cards. Take the cards of the last column
and discreetly move the chosen card (2 of Spades at the middle of the
7 cards (Photo 4 and 5). You can speak to misdirect her
attention while you displace her chosen card.

6) Turn the 3 blocks of cards face down, on a block of 21 cards, place
1
card from the deck of 7 cards overtaking more or less the
middle
of the length of a card (Photo 6). Then place another card from the
same deck of 7 cards, but this one doesn't overtake (Photo 7).
Alternate the 7 cards like that with one overtaking the other until
you have placed the 7 cards on the deck of 21 cards (Photo 7).
After
place the remaining block of 21 cards on the 28 cards you will have a
total of 4 cards overtaking; this is necessary in order to set-up the
trick to end
it in an impressive way (Photo 8).

Tap gently the bottom of the cards overtaking from the deck on the
table. As you do so, apply the right pressure on the deck with
your thumb and your index finger to make 3 cards rise
on the other
side, intertwining
with those which overtake. Turn around the deck of cards and repeat
another series of taps on the 3 cards overtaking, you will get 2 other
cards overtaking. Turn around the deck of cards and tap the two cards
overtaking, this will make rise one card: "Her card"

Turn
the deck of cards around and tap the two cards overtaking; this will
make one card rise: "Her card". When you make it rise, you
can turn it back to your spectator, this makes for a better surprise.
You can say: "As I told you, the third time I tap on the
deck, your card will magically appears." And you turn the card
face to your spectator. |

If you want to
present this magic trick without looking, you can turn your back to
your spectator and she does all of the dealing.
Explain the
spectator how to deal and gather the cards. Ask her after the first
dealing in which column her card is. Imagine her card is in the third
column at the first dealing, and in the second column at the
second dealing.
If she gathers
the cards face up like that:
The 2nd
column is placed on the 1st
column, then the 3rd
column is placed on the 2nd,
the 4th
on the the 3rd,
the 5th
and the 4th,
the 6th
on the 5th
and the 7th
on the 6th.
Knowing she has gathered the cards in this way will allow to
know the exact position of her card in the deck with this quick
calculation:
P = (F - 1) x 7 + 8 - G
F = the
Number of the column after the first dealing
G
= the Number of the column after the second dealing
P = the
exact position of her card in the deck after gathering the cards.
Once you know the
exact position, close your eyes and ask her to count the cards
on the table dealing them face down on the table; when she arrives at
the number corresponding at the position you have calculated, say
"STOP".
She returns the last card dealt, it is her card.
It is a way to present the trick without even touching them!
Nevertheless, be clear in your instructions and assure
yourself
for each step that the spectator understands what she has to do.
